The Lock / Unlock Layer button has disappeared from Illustrator

The Lock / Unlock Layer button has disappeared from Illustrator. It has also been faded out from the Object Drop down menu. How do you fix this ?

In the menu it will lock/unlock objects, not layers.

Can you please show us what's selected?

And also: what's in your layers panel?
