The marquee zoom no longer works in Illustrator

Participant ,
Jul 27, 2025 Jul 27, 2025

Forever - and I mean FOREVER - I've been able to hold down the command key and the space bar to get the MARQUEE ZOOM tool which I use ALL THE TIME. Now suddenly - I guess in the hopes that it justifies the absolutely ridiculous 20% increase in the price of CC in a market where graphic artists are getting replaced by ADOBE'S AI - the marquee zoom either no longer works at all, or Adobe pulled another Adobe and decided their terribly inefficient version of the zoom should now be the default and in order to go back to the way it's worked SMOOTHLY and FOREVER - we have to come to the site here in the hopes someone can tell us what is happening and which magic boxes we need to check or uncheck to get it back to working the way IT'S ALWAYS WORKED. I swear if they gave out awards for companies who make life hard for their customers - Adobe would win every freakin' year.

Anyway, is there a kind soul in the room (not as frustrated as I am) who knows what happened to the MARQUEE ZOOM option that can help me? I would much appreciate it - thanks in advance.

If you turn off Animated Zoom in Preferences > Performance and use Spacebar Cmd it should work.

Thank you, Tom. Fast response and works now - appreciate it. Hope Adobe gave you a nice raise with all that extra $$$ they're pulling in from us suckers too lazy to switch to whatever Affinity's draw program is called.

I don't work for Adobe, Adobe employees here have an Adobe logo next to their name.

I heard Adobe was going to double his salary! (Now, let's see, 2×$0 is how much again?))

Well props to both of you. I got tired of trying to keep up with all of Adobe's useless "upgrades" years ago. Life is too short to continually have to relearn the same tools I've been using for close to 40 years. It would be nice if Adobe actually hired a couple guys like you to help them understand stability and bug extermination is more important now than finding a new place to hide some feature we've had for years or changing the tools keyboard commands just to keep us on our toes.

"Forever - and I mean FOREVER - I've been able to hold down the command key and the space bar to get the MARQUEE ZOOM tool which I use ALL THE TIME. Now suddenly - ... - the marquee zoom either no longer works at all"

Suddenly is suddenly since 2020 when animated zoom and GPU perfomance became the default.

It has been announced at that time as a new feature.

Cmd-spacebar was already hacked by Apple for the Spotlight search shortcut.

Tom - you have to understand a lot of us do not work for Adobe, so it is not worth our time to "update" every year when Adobe "upgrades" (saying that tongue in cheek) because they are not adding anything worthwhile. "Upgrading" one program often means "upgrading" 2 or 3 others so they can all still work well together. The era of game changing features has been over for a good 15 years (at least) so it makes more sense (to a lot of us - I think the majority) to simply set up a system that works for our own business and ride it as long as possible. I get that YOU want to be up to the minute because you have no choice if you want to be the Adobe "community expert". There was a time when I had to be that guy too. But even back then - I had two systems set up on different computers... one to keep up with all the (unnecessary) "upgrades" and one set up for working on actual graphics jobs that was reliable.

So far as Adobe "announcements" - they spam me 3 or 4 times a day trying to make another sell. You honestly believe my life revolves around Adobe like yours?  You are the anomaly - not the norm.

That's ok, if you want to work that way, but don't complain that things "suddenly " changed when they changed 5 years ago. You noticed how easy it (sometimes) is to get an answer here if you missed a new feature.

Okay fine, Tom - but it's not exactly a "new feature" - they changed the way something we already had worked. And btw, I was curious about the last discussion we had about the live updates thing where you can have the preview in one window and the wireframe in another so you can work on the wireframe and see live updates in the preview window. I said it was not around that long and you showed me that it was around since the earliest versions. I could have sworn it was not around that long and when looking into - saw that what I thought was the time they added it was actually the time they simply changed the name of it. So we were basically both right. Just another example of Adobe deciding unilaterally to change the name (or the keyboard command or the menu it's under) when it's working fine the way it was. I don't know if you're still working a real graphics job - but I am, and everytime they move something around or change it for no reason they devalue my skill set and waste my valuable time either figuring it out on my own or coming over here to bug you guys for help. Then they raised the price of CC 20% this year - as basically an original user of Illustrator (Photoshop, etc...) I have every right to complain all I want and I will.

Again though - thanks for your help.

Because people were demanding that. You have to understand that other users with other demands exist and that there are not just old users like you (and me), but new ones as well who come from completely different backgrounds and have completely different demands. And the scrubby zoom was one of those.

Good lord you people are definitely being paid by Adobe. Okay, rant over.

That's all well and good, Monika - now explain the 50,000 other unnecessary (or maybe not) changes they've made over the years across all their platforms and applications. One "upgrade" (I believe it was AI6 - Tom can check that for us) they switched around something like 50% of the keyboard commands so they "matched" Photoshop commands... except they didn't match PSD at all. And the worst part? There are PLENTY of things they could do that would actually HELP and wouldn't require any "unnecessary changes" (using the term lightly). For instance? Fixing InDesign so when you jump from one text box to a connected text box on another page - it puts the text box in question IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCREEN where the user can actually see it, instead of forcing the user to adjust the page view every time to continue working. Maybe you can pass that one up the ladder for me.

I have registered my complaint more than once with Adobe. Even made suggestions when I was considered an Authorized Dealer and had direct phone access to the Adobe mucky-mucks back in the day. That all changed for two reasons...

1) They never listen to their users and...

2) Why am I wasting my valuable time offering my professional expertise to help a company that is not paying me when there are plenty of companies who ARE paying me for my valuable time and expertise (something you and Tom might want to consider as well 😉.)

BTW, something else I thought of since the last time we talked... You said the reason the marquee zoomed changed was because the newer users wanted it (why NEW users take prominence over VETERAN users would be the next question - but I digress). But Tom said the reason was because "Apple 'hacked' the keyboard command for Spotlight" (which sounds like more Adobe vs. Apple nonsense and doesn't seem to be the way it works on my computer - but maybe I'm behind the times on that one too). Either way - you guys want to get on the same page with that one.

Finally - in all seriousness - thanks for your help (Tom) and your added input (Monika with a K) - appreciate it. If Adobe products worked as well as you two... we wouldn't have a problem here.  😌

That's not what Ton (with an N) wrote. Apple hijacking the shortcut happened much earlier than GPU rendering being introduced to Illustrator.

My name is written with a K, because that's the German spelling. No need to stress that.

Well, you and Ton (with an N - thanks for pointing that out, MoniKa) are still saying two different things. And since you both seem WAY too invested in defending Adobe (especially IF there is no paycheck involved) maybe you should hash it out in private and get back to me.

In the meantime - again - thanks to you and ToN for your help.

You keep implying that the community support persons are getting paid (except for those that have the Adobe logo). You have been told we are not. It's rude to keep implying otherwise.

I don't think we are saying different things.

Illustrator had the shortcut Cmd Space

Then Apple started using it for Spotlight Search and it did not work anymore for the Zoom Tool in Illustrator.

So you need to use Space Cmd instead (or change the Spotlight shortcut in your System Preferences).

Dave: Welcome back to the conversation - appreciate your input even though I disagree with your opinion.

Ton (not Tom - sorry for that) - Obviously you're saying two different things. Your take (just now in your updated, clarified version of events...) - "Illustrator had the shortcut Cmd Space. Then Apple started using it for Spotlight Search and it did not work anymore for the Zoom Tool in Illustrator."

Monika - "Because people were demanding that. You have to understand that other users with other demands exist and that there are not just old users like you (and me), but new ones as well who come from completely different backgrounds and have completely different demands. And the scrubby zoom was one of those."

Those are two very different takes - not that it matters, btw. You gave me the correct answer, I appreciate it and I still think Adobe changes things around merely to make us believe they are "improving" things.

Again - thanks for the help and all 3 of you - even Dave - should be getting paid by Adobe.  🙂

Ton - thanks for the help, really. But this is turning into one of those Adobe "only 15 minute" surveys where nobody wins a $500 Amazon card and Adobe gets free professional advice on how to do their job. I read it. I got it. Thank you (and Monika... Dave? Eh... he didn't provide much info).

If you are on a Mac, you also need to disable the Spotlight keyboard shortcuts.
