Threaded Text disappearing

I am creating a document in inDesign and have run into this problem a few times. I have several text fields threaded together and at a certain point, the text completely dissapears even though I have plenty of room remaining for more text.

Sorry, I misspoke in the original post, this is in Illustrator. No the text boxes are not one character each.

So this is just one line of text with no breaks?

How many characters?

There was something about that, but I don't remember what it was.

It's not possible to have multiple text threads?

So each letter is a text frame? What does Edit in Text mode show?
