Threaded Text grayed out - Illustrator

I want to thread these text frames, so that I can select them all together, since Illustrator does not allow you to select more than one text inside a single frame at a time, but every time I select it all the thread text option is grayed out. Does it work if you click the little box on the lower right side of the bounding box, then click on the next text object?
