I have an image I am trying to turn into a 3d rendering. It has two colors, black background and a grey logo. I am trying to change the background to white so I can trace bitmap, but can't figure out how to get an outline of the object. Using Image Trace just makes the image all black.

You could create a "Path" using Photoshop.  In Ps, select the black, invert selection > Save as a Path.  Select the Path, copy then paste in Illustrator.

Or even easier:

First select the image and select Edit > Edit Colors > Invert Colors.

Then click Image Trace and In the Image Trace panel (Window > Image Trace) set the Threshold to something like 200 or Higher.

In the Advanced options check Ignore White.

Expand the Tracing result.

In the Image Trace panel (Window > Image Trace) set the Threshold to something like 45 or 50.

After Expanding the trace, select Edit > Edit Colors > Invert Colors.
