Transforming Ellipse Group

I'm trying to change the size of a group of ellipses, but when I change either the height or width (can't do both because the link option is grayed out), the change does take place but then the option for changing the other dimension(s) disappears. What's the deal?

Sorry, I misunderstood. Nothing happens at all when I click it, as in, nothing whatsoever changes even a pixel on my screen, either to the objects or in the dialogue box.

Maybe you should reboot the system and reset the Illustrator preferences.

Did you try to click on the link option? It is always grey when it is inactive.
