Transparency and image/shape/object outline issue

Illustrator has been playing up and recently it has been failing to load shapes and images from template files i have been using for over a year. It is also adding background to shapes when im moving the shape but then dissapears when it stops moving. It's also messing up when adjusting the transparency of a shape or object. This has only happened in the last few days. I have tried uninstalling illustrator and then re-installing it as well as resetting my preferences but no changes. Any idea what might be going on. Are there any clipping masks involved? Does it behave better when you switch from GPU to CPU Preview: Cmd E or Ctrl E?

Lifesaver! Thank you! Somehow I had changed over to GPU and yes it was mainly in relation to clipping masks where it had the biggest issue. It also fixed the shape background issue.
