Transparency really hard to see

I have been working with multiply transparency overlays of black and white images over colored backgrounds for a while without any issues. Recently, the transparency is REALLY hard to see in Illustrator- when I export to png, it's night and day difference. I've updated my graphics card driver, checked my monitor, made sure my color image settings are set to RGB in illustrator. I'm at a loss, please help!

Can you try if that works better when the image is linked?

Would you mind posting a screenshot of your Layers panel? You might also select the layer that has the Blend Mode applied and open the Appearance Panel.
