I am setting up my workspace for the first time. I opened "color" and "swatches" and accidentally hooked them together horizontally. I want them to hook them up vertically. How do I unhook them so I can change that.

You should be able to click anywhere on one of the icons except the dark bar at the top, and drag them apart.
You can then drag one icon onto the other to connect vertically. When you see the horizontal blue glow, release to join them.

Peter,
Thank you so much for responding to my query. It doesn't work, though. Both color and swatches are larger, and have other options on the top bar. To the right of color I have a tiny box, maybe it's a help button, and to the right are 2 very small boxes, one says layers, and below that is libraries. I can move the little boxes doing what you suggest, but color and swatches are still stuck together next to each other. Any other ideas?
Thanks! Barbara

It sounds like the panels are expanded and open. Can you close them so they look like they appear in @tromboniator answer? Either way, you should be able to move them around. Can you upload an image of your color and swatch panels so we can see exactly what you are talking about. Also, you might try going to the top of the menu bar to the right and just reset the workspace and see if that helps.

Resetting the workspace did the trick. Thanks so much for the suggestion, plus how to find the right place to do that!

@michelew83603738 Thanks for weighing in on this—I got busy.
Hi, Barbara. From your description I'm guessing that your setup looks something like this:
To add to what Michele said, you can, if you wish, collapse the color and swatches panel by clicking the icons indicated by the arrows. And you should be able to pull the panels apart by clicking and dragging anywhere in the areas enclosed in the rectangles.
Michele's suggestion to reset seems like sound advice.

Peter,
Thanks so much for getting back to me. Your picture was accurate. I did try pressing on the buttons you indicated, and when I pressed one, both boxes closed. Then, when I would open one of them, both would reappear, still connected.
But, Michele suggested resetting the workspace, and how to do it, and that did the trick.
Now I can continue my tutorial. Until the next snafu...

Hi, Barbara,
I'm glad that you're able to move ahead. There are several ways that the panels can connect, including as tabs on a unified panel.
And we all have snafus!
