Trying to set tabs (tabletops) in Illustrator

I'm trying to set tabstops for text and according to Adobe instructions I should be able to do so in Window>Type>Tabs. However, I have no options for tabs in my Type dropdown. Where should I go for this, or how to get this to appear in my dropdown. Thanks
