Tutorial Robot!

Full disclosure:  I am an absolute novice with Illustrator.  I've used software like this before, but this is my first foray into actual Illustrator.

Here's my question...  I am absolutely struggling with this shape from the Tutorial.  The rest of the tutorials were pretty clear and explicit, but I'm not entirely sure how to solve this one:

Asset 3.png

I can make the rectangle with the rounded corners, but once I try to remove those rectangles, they automatically fill in.  I can remove them from a rectangle which is NOT rounded, but once I round it, those rectangles get filled in and I can't remove them again.

I know this is simple, but I am absolutely stumped.  If anyone can help, I would greatly appreciate it.

Hard to follow exactly what you are asking. Take a look at the pathfinder palette. With unite and minus front you can achieve this, so forget about the othjers for now.

Don t worry so much about getting the colors right, will help you to see what shape is on top if they are different.

Select the red and yellow and do a unite

Select the yellow and blue and do a minus front. Since it is blue is a different color than yellow, you can confirm it is on top.

Below is the result, as you see you can quickly change the colors.

The concept of composite paths and transparency may be confusing for you, but you can do a Shift Command D to show transparency.

Do Shift command D again to toggle out of showing the transparency via a chekcerboard pattern.

I made the shapes as you showed and when selected them and hit unite, this is what I got:

Asset 2.png

I'm following the same process and getting a different result, so am I making the rounded rectangles wrong?  (I would think that one's as good as the other, but clearly mine are not behaving as they should, or as they did for you.)

Make four rectangles, two rounded, two not.  Combine these two, remove the other two from that union.  It's not that complex of an idea, so I'm baffled what I am not understanding or doing to make this work.
