Two Color Text Problem

Using InDesign I am able to use an open font with a fill variation under it to achieve a two tone effect. Wirking with Zebrawood, for example, I can use Zebrawoof Fill for text, then create a new layer above the text and using Zebrawood Standard, overlay the text, and the color from the layer below comes through.

When I try to duplicacte this in Illustrator, only the top layer shows with white  showing as the contrast instead of the sublayer's color. An example clipped from a EPS created with InDesign is attached

Seems to work for me in Illustrator as well.

Can you share a sample Illustrator file with the issue you are talking about?
