Unable to color inside an object - can only do the outlines

I'm trying to color the inside of a shape in Adobe Illustrator. I drew an oval - a black outline on white paper - and I took a picture in Adobe Capture and saved it in a library. I then opened it in Adobe Illustrator. I use either the select tool or the direct select tool. I get a series of circles along the lines of the object. When I double-click the solid square on the Fill and Stroke tool, it colors the lines of the object.

What am I doing wrong? I feel like I don't know how to select correctly. I've always used PC's and Microsoft... maybe I'm not doing the selecting correctly here?

I found the answer! I take the pencil tool, trace over the outline of the section I want to fill with color, then click on Window > Pathfinder. If I select the section now, then double-click the solid square on the Fill and Stroke tool, it colors inside the section.

Can you please show a screenshot that includes the layers panel?

Thank you, Monika! I didn't see your reply until after I answered. Should I still post a screenshot with the layers panel?
