Whenever I try to relink a file in via the link pannel in Illustrator,

I get the message pop up saying "An unknown error has occurred"

Have had this for over a year now and it starts to annoy me. Anyone else has this problem?

I am curious if your file name you are linking to has too many characters? I've seen this happen with really long file or folder names. Can you try to rename to shorten the file name and see if re-linking to it works?

Hi Meganchi,

The file i'm trying to link to only consists of one English word.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the trouble. I would request if you can share a few more details like:

  1. The exact version of Illustrator and the Operating System.
  2. Does this happen on a specific file or multiple files?
  3. Where are the files saved which you are trying to link, locally or on any network or shared drive?
  4. If possible please try changing the location of the file and relink again and see if that makes the difference.

Regards

Rishabh

Hi Rishabh,

Thank you for your quick response

1. I am running Illustrator 24.0.2 (latest) and MacOS 10.15.2 (latest)

2. It appears to be happening only when relinking PDF files, but it does not hapen always.

I was just trying to replicate the problem again and now i'm having no issues (same files, same location) etc...

But the problem pops up every so often.

3. Both Original and the file I want to relink are stored locally.

4. Have tried this solution in the past and it did not work.

I have been trying to nail down the problem by trying different things in the past but the problem seems to start at random. There's no string of events that causes this to hapen.

The only thing I noticed is it that it only hapens on projects that have been closed, and re-opened later. It never hapens in new projects. But that's just a wild shot.

If you want I can record a video the next time this hapens and post it here for further investigation?

Thanks for sharing the details. The current version of the Illustrator we have is 24.0.3 for macOS. I'd recommend updating and observe how it works after that.
