Unable to type character (ș) in Illustrator on Windows 10, can type in other apps & on macOS

Hi folks,

I have this problem wich drives me nuts. I have this character I need to use (ș/Ș) and Illustrator just won't let me type it on canvas. It works in renaming layers, works everyhwere else (notepad, MS Office, etc). I have a Windows 10 PC with a romanian keyboard layout. If I change the keyboard layout, it types whatever is on that key (En.:`~). Uninstalled, reinstalled Illustrator with revemove user prefs, nothing works. Even designed a new layout in Microsoft's Keyboard Layout Creator! No problem on my Mac whatsoever.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

Thank you!

Hi there,

Sorry about the trouble you are facing. I understand your frustration. The suggestion given by @Ton Frederiks is correct. If that doesn't help, I will request you to share a few more details like:

  • The exact version of Illustrator
  • Is the issue happening in a specific document or with a particular font? If yes, could you please share the font or a sample document with us? You can upload it to the Creative Cloud (https://helpx.adobe.com/in/creative-cloud/help/share.html) and share the download link here or via DM.
  • Did you encounter this issue for the first time, or has it happened before?
  • Are you able to copy-paste it from MS-Word or Notepad or a Web browser in a new Illustrator document?
  • Screenshot of your Type preferences

Looking forward to your response.

Thanks & Regards,

Hi, Anshul!

Thank you for your reply. Ton Fredriks's solution works as it should, no problem there. It's just time consuming. The "ș" glyph is in Romanian just like "é" or "à" in French - not practical in a complex file with tight deadline 😞

The good news is that a wild update just arrived (25.4.1) which solved the problem! Go figure.

Now, back to the list, maybe it helps:

  • Previous version. I guess it was 25.4.0.
  • Any document (including new), any font.
  • For the first time. Maybe, just maybe, it happened just after the previous update. Who knows.
  • Yes, the copy/paste was the solution I used to finish the jobs I had to do.
  • Type preferences: default, as after fresh install.

Thank you people for your inputs. We can close this subject.

Have a nice and chill day!

There was a similar problem with German accented characters like ü and ö that could not be typed. Let's hope that this update solves that problem as well.
