Question

Unable to work with illustrator

Hello everyone.

I have been experiencing great latency in working with illustrator for a few days now.

No upgrades of any kind have been made to either the PC or the hardware, but for some time now I have realised that the software has become unusable. You only have to watch the attached video to realise this for yourself. Here I was doing a simple drag and copy of the red dot.

Is anyone in the same situation as me?

I take advantage of the post to also ask if there is any configuration or way to set up illustrator to make the pdfs I import as a background on which to do my references and illustrations lighter and more manageable.

The following are my PC configurations:

Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-9900K CPU @ 3.60GHz, 3600 Mhz, 8 cores, 16 logical processors

(RAM) 32.0 GB

NVIDIA Quadro P2200

Hi @ANDREA MARCONI,

Sorry to hear that Illustrator's been running so slowly for you lately, that does sound frustrating.

To get a better sense of what's going on, could you confirm if the lag occurs with all files or mainly when working with PDFs as background references? If it's mostly with PDFs, try flattening the artwork or rasterizing complex parts before placing them. This can help lighten the load and improve performance.

Also, could you let me know which version of Illustrator you're currently using? It would be great if you could try turning off GPU Performance from Preferences > Performance to see if that makes a difference. Since you're running a Quadro P2200, do check that the latest NVIDIA Studio Driver (version 576.52) is installed, this can have a big impact on stability and speed as the expert suggested.

If you can, please test the same steps in Safe Mode or using a new local admin user account. This can help us rule out any background apps or user-specific settings that might be causing the slowdown. You can refer to these articles for guidance:

Looking forward ot hearing back from you.

Here I am. Last night I tried opening the same file on an earlier version 29.3.1 and it worked, and very well too. This morning before writing to you on the forum I tried uninstalling the latest 29.6 and installing 29.3.1 on the same pc yesterday, so same configuration.

Magically the file works perfectly, no lag and no jerks of any kind. I don't know what it's due to, but between the latest version and the previous one, something has 'worsened'. Can I be of any help in any way in getting information on how to possibly correct or understand where the problem comes from?

Have you tried basic trouble shooting steps, such as checking for driver updates for your NVidia Quadro card? Since your computer has a Quadro card it should be running the Studio driver. The latest version is 576.52 released on May 19. If any other peripherals are attached to the computer (such as a Wacom tablet) drivers typically need to be kept up to date for those devices as well.

Also, watch out for other open applications running in the background and their potential to affect Adobe Illustrator performance.

BTW, NVidia released a driver update (version 576.80) hours after I posted the comment above.

🤔 🤔🤷‍♀️

Where do you have find it?

When i search the last one, i see only version 573.42.

I can't tell if the NVidia application for your computer is up to date. It looks different from the NVidia App installed on my computers. I don't know if NVidia has one version of its app for the United States and a different version for European nations like Italy. I think the latest version of the NVidia app is needed to download either the latest Game Ready driver or Studio driver.
