unwanted bits

Hello, basically i'm trying to get rid of the parts of this drawing that extend beyond the borders of the brown square, i've tried scissors tool, clipping mask, shape builder . . I'm just wondering is there a proper efficient way to do this? Any help much appreciated

Hi, 
The mask should be fine in this case, because it looks like the artwork is transparent. 
You need to copy the square, deselect all, then paste square with Paste in front command (Ctrl+F) above everything, then select all artwork in this area and create a mask (Ctrl+7).  Objects outside the square will be hidden but still editable. 

In case if you need to completely remove them, you can use mask again, and after that use Flatten Transparency command from Object menu, and choose High Res preset there.
