Use eyedropper on another open document

Is this possible? I can't seem to be able to do it. The tooltip changes when I move between side by side documents.

Selection / target

Tooltip switches to arrow

Also when I add the swatch from the source document, it is not available when I switch to the target document. I basically have no way of copying the appearance besides pasting the target into the selection document or writing down the color code..

Try holding down the shift key while moving the eyedropper to the other document.

Thank you for the suggestion. This doesn't work for me. Please see screencast.

Did you keep the Shift down while dragging? Also check the settings of the eyedropper tool (double click the tool)?

Eyedropper settings:

I am hitting V, selecting a target shape, hitting I, holding shift, and attempting to drag the cursor to the other window. The tooltip changes when it crosses over the other document.

I have also tried creating and saving a graphic style file from the first document. Once loaded into the target document, I am able to change the attributes of one shape at a time. Furthermore, using the eyedropper won't allow me to change all selected shapes:

Respectfully, I am completely baffled that this workflow is so difficult / impossible. How am I the first illustrator user in history who needs to copy appearances between open documents?

Well, it seems that when working with complex appearances, copy, paste, pick-up, apply and delete the pasted object is the fastest way.

Maybe someone can come up with a better idea.
