Good day, I have a black logo and found a vector file colour pallete, how do i basically place the colour background within the logo?
Try to select the logo and do Object=>Expand first.

Brandon,
If the logo is vector artwork, you can just select it and change colour; to cover all possible purposes it is better to have only fill.
If the logo is raster artwork, you can create a sufficiently large background object (rectangle or whatever) with the desired fill colour, then make a(n Opacity) Mask with both Clip and Invert Mask ticked, in the Transparency panel.
But in that case it will be better to create a vector version of the logo and use that, in other words redrawing it; tracing is inferior.

Brandon,
In that case you can the turn the logo into a Compound Path if not already (a mere Group fails to work) and place the coloured rectangle behind the logo (or the logo on top of the rectangle), then select both and make a Clipping Mask/set with Ctrl/Cmd+7 (hold Ctrl or Cmd and press 7).
But to cover all possible purposes it is better to apply the colouring directly to the Compound Path forming the logo.

When i try make it into a compund path its says it can't. All objects in a compound path must be paths, and they cannot be brushed or be part of an object

Brandon,
If the letters are live Type, create outlines of them.
Please use the Insert Photos button (looks like moon over mountains at the top of the Reply box) and post a screenshot of the selected logo along with the relevant part of the expanded Layer in the layers panel, and the Appearance panel.
Something needs to be broken down into basic parts that can form a single Compound Path.

I think it should work if you first select the logo and make it into a compound path and then apply the gradient.

Thanks all, you were all helpful on it. Got it right
