Warped text with original Blue outline / overlay or something

So how do I get rid of this from being over my text when i drag / hover over it? It's annoying and I can't do anything over top of it with it like this.

If you expand it or outline it, you won't be able to edit it.

Turning off Smart Guides works, as per Monika.

So does locking the object. These two methods are non-destructive.

better yet, how do I make type as an object to alleviate this issue?

That will make it uneditable.
