Watercolour texts

Hi,

I am trying to achieve an effect where e.g. I have a background with watercolour splotches but I overlay text and just want the watercolour areas overlapping with the text to show up. How is this achieved in Illustrator? Clipping masks? Pathfinder?

Example would be: https://creativemarket.com/ianbarnard/222700-AquaType-Vector-Watercolor-Effects

Would this technique apply to say a superman graphic inside text?

Thanks!
