Question

Wedding Invitation Design needs to be Transparent and Background Black

Hello,

My fiance and I have designed our own wedding invitations.  We are going to print them on gold foil stock, so everything I've designed in black in Illustrator will actually be gold, and the background will be black.  Now that I've created the design, I am trying to make my lettering and designs transparent, and everything else black.  I'm not sure how to do this.  I've tried everything in pathfinder along with other ideas, but I can't seem to figure it out on my own.  What should I do?

Thank you,

Melissa

    Melissa,

I've designed in black in Illustrator will actually be gold, and the background will be black

As indicated by this, if you wish the design to be gold on a black stock, you can just use it as it is and instruct the printer to replace the black by gold ink.

    But this indicates the opposite:

We are going to print them on gold foil stock

And if you wish the design to be black on a gold stock, I would suggest your using a rich black (you may consider which rich black depending on the actual colour of the gold stock, the often recommended rich black promarily with Cyan is bluish, and it is better to have a magenta/yellow based rich black for a reddish gold foil).

Or you may ask the printer to decide one or use a deep black spot colour.

You may consider the readability: black on gold may be easier/safer, especially with the thin Type.

Especially if you have access to a laser printer and some black and yellow paper, you may try both ways (using the an combination of Y and M and/or C to simulate gold), with the reservation that the shininess of gold enhances the visibility.

The shapes are already black. Should be sufficient.

Send this to the print house and ask them if their process requires a different approach, but I don't think so.
