Weird looking crumpled shapes appear when using the divide or shape tool on overlapping shapes

Hi there, while using the divide tool on a few overlapping shapes (outlined numerals actually) I get weird crumpled shapes near some borders (I also tried the shape builder tool with the same result), just by the way, there has been no stroke applied..
