What happened to Adobe Illustrator? It is absolute crap now.

I have used Adobe Illustrator professionally since version 8 back in 2000. Has always been a great fairly solid piece of software, the last solid version "I still use today" is CS6, very minimal if any buggy software issues.

I have been hesitant to make the jump to the CC platform, and in my 2 months of experience with Illustrator 2021, it is absolute garbage.....

• measurement issues when selecting multiple objects

• preview issues on an i5 with integrated iris pro 6200 graphics

• some toolbars won't even display sometimes

• resource hog

•

If adobe does not create better software I think we will stick with CS6 for as long as we can until a soild competitor arises..

Adobe, you've really dropped the ball on creating good software that is not heavily plagued and buggy

I don't have those issues so it is difficult to agree.

Perhaps if you were to go into more detail about them (or about one of them at a time), solutions could be forthcoming.

Sure thing, just posting my experience with this software. Been using it heavily for a long time, thought my 2 cents would help someone else out in making the decision to jump into buggy software that is not ready for the public.

Adobe shouldn't use their own customers as beta testers...

i5 and iris pro is pretty low end these days, I suspect. I'm on an i5, 2015 model, with a 2gb amg radeon, and that one struggles. The radeon is an upgrade from the integrated iris. Iris is not for professionals, unless you are making very simple and light things. Some other programs do perform better on the same machine, but usually those are much lighter on features.

Otherwise I wouldn't really quibble with your complaints, but I do agree that you should go through the issues one by one to see if they can be sorted out.

Absolutely agree.  Every feature now seems to work in reverse of the legacy version and I'm afraid to click anything because it will try to install new software in my computer every time.  The whole Adobe suite now feels like a crappy webpage designed to entrap you into subscribing for a service you don't want.

Clicking anything in Illustrator will not install new software.

The only feature that works better in older versions is Image Trace.

I couldn’t agree more. I’ve been using Adobe products since the late ’80s, and it’s frustrating to see the decline in quality over the years. Adobe, please stop focusing on adding flashy new features that most users don’t need or want. Instead, dedicate your resources to refining and fixing what’s already there. Many of your product redesigns have sacrificed reliability and usability, leaving us longing for the functionality and stability of older versions that simply worked better.

Hello @Michael38388437a6bz,

I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble using Illustrator. Would you mind sharing more details about your exact workflow, including a screen recording of the problem (if possible) and the version of the OS/Illustrator installed, so I can better assist you?

Looking forward to hearing from you.

Anubhav,

Thank you for your response. Unfortunately, the issues I’ve encountered with Adobe’s products are far too many to articulate. It’s disheartening to see how Adobe seems to have lost its way, and I know I’m not alone in feeling this. Many design professionals with decades of experience in the industry share similar frustrations. Virtually all of those with whom I speak are award-winning, industry-leading illustrators and designers who, like me, have relied on Adobe products as critical tools throughout their careers.

The irony is that while the cost of using Adobe’s products has skyrocketed compared to what we used to pay, the quality and reliability that once made these applications industry-leading have significantly declined. For instance, users frequently report that Illustrator and Photoshop have become almost unusable due to extreme lag and performance issues, even on high-spec machines. I’ve experienced these issues myself, even with regular updates, and only recently saw improvement after upgrading to an M4 high-spec MacBook Pro—a solution that most professionals shouldn’t have to rely on to use software effectively.

Illustrator and Photoshop used to be my go-to applications for virtually everything, from graphic design to early wireframe work. Today, they are plagued with bugs. Everything from how Illustrator magnifies a selection to how selections are made feels clunky and unreliable. Photoshop, unfortunately, is just as problematic. Features like cropping, perspective warp, and even basic adjustments frequently malfunction, turning formerly seamless workflows into frustrating exercises in troubleshooting.

My peers and I generally agree on one thing: we don’t need continuous product redesigns—we need the features Adobe has already created to simply work. In fact, I would argue that I don’t need more features at all. Having worked in Fortune 5 companies as a designer, I understand that adding new features is often a strategy to drive sales and sustain market share. But with subscription models now firmly in place, is this approach even necessary? We’re already paying on a monthly cadence, as opposed to upgrading every two or three years like we used to. The focus should shift from overloading the software with new, often unnecessary features, to ensuring that the core functionality is stable, reliable, and performant.

And don’t even get me started on the subscription model—a system Adobe helped pioneer and one that nobody I know wants or needs. For those of us who have been loyal customers for decades, the subscription model feels more like a punishment than a service. It locks users into perpetual payments without delivering the reliability, innovation, or value to justify the expense. Gone are the days when we could make a one-time purchase, own the software outright, and decide when or if we wanted to upgrade. Now, we’re compelled to keep paying indefinitely, regardless of whether the tools meet our expectations.

Frankly, I—and virtually every designer I know—was happier with Adobe applications from ten years ago than with the more “robust” products we are forced to use today, which supposedly leverage AI. So far, these AI features have been unimpressive at best, adding unnecessary complexity while ignoring the foundational functionality designers rely on daily. Adobe’s modern approach seems to prioritize chasing trends, such as AI integration, over delivering a reliable and effective experience for the professionals who have depended on these tools for years.

Adobe’s legacy is built on empowering creative professionals with the most reliable, innovative tools in the industry. I hope the company will take these concerns seriously and refocus on restoring the quality and reliability that once defined its products.

Sincerely,
Michael G. Wiekrykas

I know everyone loves a complaint thread, but if no one is willing to go into detail about any of the issues they are experiencing then how will any of them get resolved?

Probably just disabling or uninstalling Magnet will solve the lag.

I agree. Why do I keep getting errors every new update every year when I take my subscription fee every month? Please, I hope the New Year's version will only be released in January after the maintenance is done properly

i agree.. I think its buggy and buggy. for example currently cannot use illustrator due to black screen on every file i open. And yes I have a beta version as well but cannot run both photoshop beta and illustrator (or even have them both installed. I primarily use illustrator and the ability to not use it and having to pay for it now for years just doesnt seem all that worthy at times and i really do it because i have utilized the maximum on portfolio for a few sites and the ability to not back those up and to keep them up is also a concern.. The resource thing is also a major thing. whoa
