What is the difference between ait file and Ai file?

When opening an ai-file and making edits saving will change the original file. 

When opening an ait-file and making edits a new ai-file is created when saving.

Another difference is artwork on the artboard.

A document based on a preset (.ai) cannot contain artwork and always gives an empty artboard.

A template (.ait) can contain artwork like a logo, textframes and so on.
