What is this icon and how to I make it go away.

Comes up when I try to select multiple items with the selection tool, and I can't select more than one item at a time. I've been using Illustrator for forever and I have never seen this.

I've tried ungrouping, expanding the shapes—nothing. I don't know what the icon is even trying to indicate.
