What is This... Need an Illustrator Guru/!

Hello,

I have been given a file to work with for some signage.  I have never seen text set up like this.  Is this a spread sheet?  

It looks like the same singel colum of text has been coppied and linked/concatenated and formatted so that the entire list of names is shown on the sign.

Is that what this?  If so, any idea how it was done?  Any idea where I could look for more info on this?

Any and all help greatly appreciated!
