I need advice as to the best digital file to convert a jpg into so that the design can be applied on many different supports (website, Posters, Online adverts, banners, T-shirts, CD's and most importantly, digital releases like an upcoming album in digital format)
The best format is to have is a vector .ai file. As you can export a .ai file to any file format you need with no loss of quality. Such as bitmapped format for web such as .png.
We need to see your art though as if it is a photograph that is not ideal for vector as you need many pixels. .jpg is a lossy format, that compresses each time you save, so whomever is ending you the file, you shodul ask for a .psd file if you need the best quality. >jpg can be ok though, as the loss in quality is not too
Keep n mind you File >> Document Color Mode >> RGB or CMYK
CMYK - for all print
RGB - for all digital needs, web, phone, video, kiosk
Is best to start out with RGB, as RGB has a larger color gamut. CMYK has s smaller color range, so your colors can sometimes get less saturated when converting to go to print.

I do recommend without knowing more the .psd format as it has compression, but no non lossy.

Just one more question the artist whose logo I will need to convert works freehand with pen/ink on paper so what is the best way to transfer the image into a psd file or straight into a vector ai file, is it to scan it and can you use any scanner or should it be specific technically somehow?
