When I type "1. " it automatically tabs it and it can't be deleted

So I am trying to type "1. " (one, period, space) in a text box but it automatically changes the space into a tab. However deleting it does nothing, it's locked in there for good. Then when I go to turn off the "Numbered Lists" button in the Paragraph panel, it deletes the whole thing. And when I go to type it again, the same thing happens. 

How do I turn this off to not automatically make a numbered list? This "feature" is irritating.
