Which version?
Which system?
Which hardware specs?
Does that happen in any file? Also newly created ones?
Does that happen with any object? Also ones that have no stroke?
Did it ever work?

8 GB RAM is not that much.
Especially when there are other apps open and you try to create 3D effect with complex paths.

3D extrude has always been resource intensive in Ai.
Could you share a screenshot of what you're trying to extrude?
To Filipin0's point, use sparingly.

i don't think its always a resource issue. i've had this problem intermittently through two laptops and 3/4 versions of CC.
it worked without problems in CS5 on a much older desktop machine.
