While creating Knockout effect in Illustrator, some of the letters are cut off incorrectly.

Hi,

I've done knockout text effects hundreds of times over the last 1-2 decades, but today it is just not working!

1. I convert the "OF CHARITIES" text to outlines.

2. I create a compound path.

3. I select the text and the background box, and select Minus Front.

4. I get this, where some of the letters are cut off toward the top. WHY?? There is nothing behind this blue box. Everything appears to be clean cut.

Hi Kristi,

Sorry to hear about this issue. As Monika and Megan already mentioned, this looks more like a GPU rendering issue. Please check if toggleing between CPU preview mode and GPU preview mode helps resolving the issue.

If not, please share a few more details like:

  • OS and version of Illustrator
  • Is the issue related to a specific document(s)/asset(s)? If yes, could you please share the document(s)/asset(s) with us? You can upload it to the creative cloud and share the download link.

Regards,

Srishti

Yes, it was a GPU rendering issue. Thank you, everyone.

Thanks for confirming this. Just in case you are using Windows Machine, please consider updating GPU driver (from manufacturer's website, avoid using DVDs/CDs) in your free time and then try turning on GPU preview to check how it works.

You're absolutely right. When viewing that way, it looks fine. It prints OK, too. I'm just curious why it did that, though... just to mess with my sanity?! 🙂

The GPU acceleration sacrifices precision for speed.

Try View > Preview on CPU

Are you sure this isn't a screen redraw issue? Does it appear that way when printd out?
