White Logo with Transparent Cutouts and Background

Hi.

I have a heart shape graphic and a paw print graphic. I want to create a logo with the heart white and the paw print inside and the background transparent.  Seems like it should be simple. But I need help, apparently.

In the example I uploaded, where it's black, I need it to be transparent.

Thank you.

Correct answer Jacob Bugge

all the shapes within the paw print are one png file.

Lee,

"all the shapes within the paw print are one png file"

In that case select both the black paw print PNG and the white heart, then in the Transparency panel click Make (Opacity) Mask (with Clip and Invert Mask unticked).

Compound Paths only works with vector objects.

Thanks for your responses.  I'm afraid I'm more of a beginner than that. ☺️

Do you have vector shapes or just that PNG?

I have the heart shape in one file and the paw print in another.  See attached.

Select the paw shape (all that belongs to it.

Copy

Open the other file

Paste

Arrange both the shapes.

Select all

Object > Compound path > Make

Could happen that some shapes don't punch correctly.

In that case: open Attributes panel

Show options

Click on the right most button "Fill rule Even odd"

Group the paths which make up the paw, bring the paw group in front of the heart path, select both and make a compound path (Ctrl + 8).

There's no need to group it.

Groups inside compound paths can lead to weird issues.
