This usually indicates that illustrator cannot find the font you are using.

Sometimes, the font does not load properly and you need to restart, sometimes it gets confused or a font is not activated (if you have a font management software or it is a cloud font).

From the Type menu, there is:

• Resolve missing fonts...
• Find/Replace fonts...
