Why is Optical Margin Alignment greyed out in Illustrator?

Not sure why this option is grayed out in the Type dropdown toolbar. Any help would be appreciated.

Don't select the text, but select the text object with the selection tool

Is your text an area text object? It should be.

Is it still grayed out when you select the text using the Selection Tool?
