Question

Width tool wonky on Star shape

When I draw a Star shape and then use the Width tool on each side, whichever side was my the endpoint of my star doesn't work right. The fill gets pulled down and the Width tool draws an irregular shape. This happens on the endpoint side regardless of where it is.

I wonder, if creating a brush profile from a straight lined stroke that is divided by the number of segments that you have as sides in the star, would allow you to then stroke the object with that brush profile? Meaning that a brush profile created from the width tool is just looking for the form it creates between (X) number of anchor points. So if you know you need to go between ten or twenty points, you could create a stroke with that many points on it, and adapt the width between each point. The distribution would theoretically be the same. Quick experiment below.

I know this isn't a perfect solution, just spitballing ideas.

I see the same behavior. If you cut the path with the Scissors Tool at the offending point that problem disappears. You will now have an open path instead of a closed one, if that's an issue.

Thank you for making me feel like I'm not a complete idiot. I love your workaround....but seriously, a workaround for something seemingly so simple?

Sorry, I'm new to the concept of asking for help from the entire world. I appreciate both the help and the guidance on how to ask for it.

  1. Draw a new star
  2. Object >> Path >> Add Anchor points (yours look very good so you may have already done this)
  3. With width  tool double click on a point to access menu
  4. repeat for all points

Was hoping you could select all points with hollow tool, and enter the value once. but could nto get taht to work. Someone else may have a trick for that.

Strange, but I got a small gap at the top. Might have to check Adobe help on the adjust adjoining Width points. Hope my reply helps you.
