Seriously, will useless ***** at Adobe EVER  do what your customers have been demanding for YEARS and fix the clipping mask issues regarding asset exporting and rasterization? What kind of  disgusting horrible company continues to "update" their software regularly but doesn't address one of the most request BUGS (not a feature)? Please for the love of your 13 billion dollar plus revenue LISTEN to your paying customers or PREPARE to have your monopoly crumble under the weight of its own hubris & incompetence.

Hi Courtney,

I am extremely sorry to hear about this frustration. I would request if you can let us know what exactly is the issue. Please share a brief description of what you wanted to be added on our Adobe Illustrator Feedback page.

This is the best way of communicating with the Engineering and Product Management teams regarding issues and suggestions so they can be implemented in future releases.

If you have already done that please share the uservoice link. I can forward it to the team and see

You do know this is a users forum and not actively monitored by Adobe.

Iff you want some users to get into your problem, could you describe what the problem is. Maybe there is a solution.

Your insincere condolences mean NOTHING to me. Your company knows EXACTLY what the problem is I am referring to as it is one of the most common complaints about Illustrator and has had many forums and many "feature requests" made regarding the issue  https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-feature-requests/suggestions/2 0359933-o...

I find it absolutely disgusting and disrespectful that your company continues to RENT us broke software without even addressing one of the most common suggestions / complaints. Your company is well aware of this issue, and it has been since you first implemented asset export (and before that when rasterizing a graphic within a clipping mask would produce the same superfluous transparent pixels.)

It's a very simple request, one made countless times as a simple google search will reveal. MAKE IT THE DEFAULT THAT EVERYTHING OUTSIDE A CLIPPING MASK ACTUAL GETS "CLIPPED" WHEN EXPORTING THE CONTENT OF SAID CLIPPING MASK. This is common sense and the fact your company still hasnt addressed this issue leads me to believe that either - A. Adobe doesnt care AT ALL about their paying customers or B. Adobe cant figure out how to do this basic task and therefore will just ignore it forever. Either option does nothing but pushes me one step closer to TOTALLY replacing all my adobe apps with the contentiously improving array of competitors.

Majestic's problem is still a problem in September 2024. Why? I've been a paying customer since 2005. You'd think you guys would have fixed this by now. There shouldn't be double stars at the bottom of the image. The lower stars were clipped out via a clipping mask. I don't want a workaround. I want the issue addressed and fixed. I expect the next update to have this problem resolved. It's been 5 years since this post and who knows how long since the first complaint. Luckily I don't use clipping masks very often, but the one time I do, it's being insanely frustrating. Yeah. This definitely needs fixing.

This was marked 'fixed' in 2020. I did a quick test in version 28.7.1 and it still appears fixed:

Could you create a new topic and show how you've constructed your image and describe exactly how you export?

Marliton,

if you were following the link that Doug provided in post 3 you would or could know about what issue we are talking.

Have you already read it?

There are possible workarounds, but they shouldn't be required at all.

I read "perhaps", so I still don't know what is the real issue.

"Perhaps" is probably obvious in that case.

But courtneyw98665068 may clarify if he/she is talking about a completely different thing.

It's very likely to be indeed this nasty case of the extraneous transparant area around the clipping mask.

You have this clipping mask:

Schermafbeelding 2019-05-27 om 23.19.56.png

Consisting of these elements:

Schermafbeelding 2019-05-27 om 23.19.32.png

But every Export option (even the Legacy one...) yields this:

Schermafbeelding 2019-05-27 om 23.22.33.png

The workaround is to turn selected object(s) into separate artboard(s), and then export the whole artboard(s) with the option to clip the image to artboard. Or you could use Photoshop to crop each image from all sides to the first non-transparent pixels. But both methods are tedious, and especially devastating to the the new and nifty Export Assets feature.

How many Adobe developers does it take to clip the input before, or crop it right after the rendition ?

If the boundary box of the artboard can be supported, then why should a clipping mask be so difficult ?

And while you're on it, stop using the term "group" in association with clipping masks in panel labels like Appearance and Properties (and its translations). It's not a Group, it's a Mask, or a Clipping Mask, to be fully correct. It's confusing.

(Sorry for hi-jacking this post...)

Yes Peter that is exactly the problem, but no peter that "work around" is not acceptable or useful, it makes everything a 10 step process when it should be a SIMPLE one step process.

This issues is so basic and so common that it both amazes and disgusts me that Adobe hasnt done anything about it yet.

Indeed, that's why it's called a workaround 😉

The problem already starts in the Assets panel, which shows the greater area of the clipped elements within the asset:

Schermafbeelding 2019-05-28 om 11.46.06.png

So whatever method the developers have been inventing or using for this new Export Assets feature, it's not better or more clever than any method in the past. 😞

And just to be sure, I quickly checked the two vector-based export options as well (SVG and PDF), but in Bridge they also show their extra padding:

Schermafbeelding 2019-05-28 om 11.46.39.png

And that's really a pity, because the SVG should do better, especially because it is meant to be the preferred output format for further digital processing.

Let's all give this bug report / feature request a Big Vote !

The Pathfinder's Crop only works well with shapes, not with lines (widths).

Schermafbeelding 2019-05-30 om 12.22.43.png

A workaround for this would be to Expand all lines into shapes before cropping.

But I guess that's becoming too much of a destructive detour to get the result...

Peter I really do appreciate your attempt to help, but you are correct, all of these work arounds are inefficient at best and destructive at worse. I simply want Adobe to fix this issue which has exited ever since clipping masks were introduced, so since before I even started using it 20 years ago...this problem is only exasperated with the inclusion of things like asset export which should speed up the creation of assets, but if you include anything with a clipping mask it becomes a pointless feature.

it doesnt help when you have raster graphics, effects etc. I would never use a clipping mask on something I can achieve with pathfinder, thats why it exists.

Kurt Gold is right. the issue is one of simple efficiency, common sense and of having a company meet the basic expectations of their paying customers. A clipping mask SHOULD "clip" the transparent pixels when rasterizing said clipping mask. SIMPLE AS THAT. FIX IT ADOBE.

TO ALL YOU  with a "whats the problem" question, maybe look into the software you are actively replying to forum question about. This is the the problem https://illustrator.uservoice.com/forums/333657-illustrator-feature-requests/suggestions/20359933-op... if you are unaware of this ongoing issue, maybe just ignore this thread as obviously you dont use the illustrator workflow that many, many people do. When exporting a graphic via the assets export panel EVERYTHING outside of the clipping mask is included as transparent useless pixels, the smae thing happens if you rasterize a graphic within a clipping mask. this is an ongoing issue with illustrator that seriously effects the workflow of people exporting multiple assets on a daily basis. this is laziness and a punch in the face to your customers. Adobe knos about this issue and the thousands of people who have commented on it. FIX IT.

It is correct in that this hasn't been fixed and the only thing anyone can do about it right now is post to the uservoice page. There isn't another answer the forums can offer.

Just as a heads-up for anyone and everyone encountering this problem, at least PNGs are exporting correctly - despite the fact that the asset export panel thumbnails still look like it's including the "outside" area.
