Windows disappear every time I open Illustrator

It drives me crazy. Every time i open Illustrator all the panels are gone. I cannot load up a default workspace other than Essentials and Essentials still gives me nothing. I have to click and bring it up every time, and restarting Illustrator has not worked.

Hi there,

Sorry to hear about the trouble you are facing. I would request you to please share a few more details like:

  • OS and version of Illustrator
  • When did this start happening? Are there any recent changes made to your system? For example, any antivirus, system updates, plugins, or web extensions installed recently.
  • Screenshot of the issue
  • Does resetting Illustrator Preferences ( https://helpx.adobe.com/illustrator/using/setting-preferences.html) help to resolve the issue?
Disclaimer: Please note that resetting preferences will remove all the custom settings, and Illustrator will launch with default settings. You can also take a backup of the folders in case you want to. Location is mentioned in the article.

We are here to help. We just need more information.

Thanks & Regards,

Anshul Saini

- This is Windows 10 Pro and Illustrator 2020.

- It's been happening for the past week and no major updates. I have installed the Overlord Plugin but it never was an issue until recently.

- Screenshot:

- Resetting does not work.

Additional info: I am using a second extended monitor but the windows never show up on the second monitor either.

Thank you for sharing the details.  I would request you to share a small video demonstrating the issue. It would be really helpful. Also, you may try the following steps:

  • Try running the app in Safe Mode & Hidden Admin Account?
  • Uninstall the Overload plugin and test if this helps resolve the issue.
  • Rename the CEP folder to CEP.old from the following location:
    C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe
  • If that doesn't help, rename the extensions folder to extensions.old in the following location:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\UXP
  • If that doesn't help either, uninstall the application using the CC Cleaner tool and reinstall from the Creative Cloud Desktop app.

Thanks & Regards,
