Can't find Illustrator preferences file Windows 10 CS5.5

Explorer ,
Dec 08, 2016 Dec 08, 2016

I am using Illustrator CS5.5 on my Windows 10 machine. After I upgraded to Win10, everything was working fine for months -- until the Stroke window changed into the Artboard window and I was unable to access the Stroke palette. So I assumed I needed to trash my preferences file but when I went to the path I was told to go to by someone or other online -- NOT Adobe, where I could NOT find any helpful answers -- to find it, it was not there.

I tried the "hold down CTRL ALT SHIFT while launching Illustrator" trick but that didn't work.

So Windows 10 updated last night (12/14/16) and this is no longer the path to the AIPrefs file and I could not find it using search. Anybody out there know the answer to this vexing situation?

Did your search include hidden files?

yes, it did -- but oddly, though I have "Show hidden files" selected in the View menu, the file in which I ultimately found the AIPrefs file was "grayed out" as though it were unavailable to me. I was able to open it, despite the grayed out quality.
