Can you apply a freeform gradient over multiple shapes?
I would like to apply a freeform gradient 2 shapes, but it doesn't seem to be possible.
No, only one.
You can't do that, but you can:
Create a third shape behind the two, large enough to contain the two, and apply your freeform gradient to it. Then select the two original shapes and make them a Compound Path. With the new Compound Path still selected, Shift-Select the freeform gradient shape and choose Object > Clipping Path > Make.

That's a pain if you want to move a section with the direct selection tool!

For selection of objects, you could use the lasso tool.
Or you could use the group selection tool instead of direct selection (just hold down alt while you have the direct selection tool)
