Can you apply a freeform gradient over multiple shapes?

 

I would like to apply a freeform gradient 2 shapes, but it doesn't seem to be possible.

You can't do that, but you can: Create a third shape behind the two, large enough to contain the two, and apply your freeform gradient to it. Then select the two original shapes and make them a Compound Path. With the new Compound Path still selected, Shift-Select the freeform gradient shape and choose Object > Clipping Path > Make.
