Chromebook compatibility

Hello,

My school is considering purchasing a laser cutter/engraver to be housed in the Library for all students to use, and I understand that we will also need to purchase software such as Adobe Illustrator. The problem is that many of our students use Chromebooks, which really don't have a hard drive. We're not in favor of just having 1 or 2 Windows machines sitting by the cutter/engraver, mostly because that limits usage. Is there any other option? Does Adobe offer a Chromebook-compatible software? Or, is there any way that a student could design something in another program, then import it into Adobe Illustrator to send it to the cutter/engraver?
Or is it possible to use Adobe Illustrator on a Chromebook?

If there's no other option, is Chromebook compatibility coming soon?

Chromebooks run on ChromeOS, which is a Linux derivative. Simply forget the idea. You will never get Illustrator for Linux nor will any commercial vendors of engraving/ cutting machines ever care to provide compatible hardware drivers. Conversely, the trouble of having your students design artwork e.g. in Inkscape and then spending another half day of fixing up their botched imported SVGs in Illustrator so they can actually be used for cutting simply isn't worth it. This goes beyond Adobe not offering AI for ChromeOS, it's simply inherent in the workflow. There have to be some PCs or Macs involved, as much as nobody may like it.

Right now we do not have Illustrator for Chromebook.You may try our Mobile applications ( Install Adobe apps on your Chromebook | Adobe Content Corner  )

I would request you to share your suggestions and feature request to our Adobe Illustrator Feedback.

This is the best way of communicating to the Engineering and Product Management teams regarding issues and suggestions so they can be implemented in future releases.

Do I understand correctly that there are apps that may work on a Chromebook

and that may have similar functions to Illustrator? If so, which app(s)

would you suggest?

Hi Kimberly,

As mentioned by Lutz, there is no application like Illustrator to be used on Chromebook. But you may use draw for basic designs which can further be used in Illustrator
