I am a Corel user for 20+ years and now I would like to learn illustrator. I am what you can call a 'basic' user and mostly I do with a vector program is:

1) Mount book covers (place bitmaps, add some text and crop/registration marks)

2) Trace simple scanned logos

I would like to know the more straightforward way to move from Corel to Illustrator, and if there is some guide for this. Or if I just have to fall over it and learn the hard way. See, I wouldn't like to attend to a course or a tutorial with the A-B-C baby stuff. Hope it make sense!

Thanks!

As a trainer, I'd recommend a 1/2 day to 1 day of custom training where you are in charge of the objectives, and can just ask all the questions you need. If that's out of the budget, consider purchasing Adobe Illustrator Classroom in a Book from Adobe Press and skim through the relevant chapters it to get up to speed quickly.

Here's an old resource, but perhaps is still helpful:

Thank you Monika and Barb!

I think that after over two decades stuck with Corel I was in a bit panic with the idea to move out. The old story of the comfort zone.

Anyway, yesterday at night I decided to make a simple exercise by myself: I picked one of my latest book covers made with Corel and completely reproduced it with AI as it would drive me directly to the point. For my total surprise it didn't take as much as I supposed: around an hour and a half including the forced pauses to google all the "how to's". I think that the long experience with PS helped because the intimacy with the interface.

Anyway, the result turned out great and I am too much more secure now. I think that the problem was in the big number of features of the tool that ended to be somewhat intimidating and the key was to just ignore the big picture and focus on what I really needed. Truth is: there is not written anywhere that you cannot use a 4x4 to cruise around the block!

There is a migration guide available. I don't know if it is still on the Adobe servers, but searching for the Corel to Illustrator migration guide should point you to other places that uploaded it.

Many features are named differently and for some things you might need to follow a different approach. So there is some stuff to learn from the beginning unfortunately.
