Delete Anchor point tool issue

I often have multiple identical objects overlayed. When I attempt to delete an anchor point from the top object, for some reason the pen(-) selects anchor points from objects that are furthest beneath, even if they are on separate layers? This only occurs in the latest version of illustrator v24 and only seems to be with the Delete Anchor Point tool and not any of the other Anchor Point tools or Selection tools.

I have the same issue. It's really frustrating, and if this is intended as a feature it's a pretty useless one!

Hi Plainsong,

I've recently updated to the latest version of Illustrator 24.0.3 and we seem to have a fix.... if you use the pen tool (P) it will delete the top anchor from a stack and if you use the Delete Anchor tool (-) it will delete the bottom anchor from a stack.

Now that's more useful.

I am at 24.0.1 on Mac but there's no updates available for now (don't know if it's a Mac issue or a non-US version issue).
But thank you, now I know I just have to wait!

Hi Ian,

To isolate the object you want to work with, use Isolation mode.

  • Double-click the object with your Selection tool
  • Switch to the Pen (-) tool and click to delete the point
  • Exit Isolation mode by pressing Escape or double-clicking outside of the object

Tip: Watch the Layers panel and/or the breadcrumbs in the upper left corner of the screen as you work in Isolation mode.

Hi Jane, thanks for your reply.

Yes, isolating the the object would be one work-around, the simplest would be to just use the pen(p) tool which still deletes points from the top layer as expected. I guess my queries is really for the Adobe team: is this change in tool behaviour from Illustrator2019 a feature or a bug?

Cheers Ian

I'm having this same issue - I work with shapes and grids in a pixel art style. I often group sets of shapes together, and double-clicking on individual squares to delete an anchor point is time-consuming, as I am then taken out of the grouping to get out of the individual square. Illustrator 2019 didn't have this issue - I hope this issue can be fixed so that the selected object is the one the delete anchor tool affects.
