Question

Downloaded Font Not Printing Correctly

Hello,

This is a common problem that I have. I create business cards/logos for people and usually download different fonts to use for them. Then, I save it as a PDF send it off to an outside printer in my area. When it's printed, the font will not be the same font. I understand why this happens as I used to work for a printing company. The printing company does not have the same font on their computer, therefore the computer tries to replace that font with some other font. I don't want to constantly send printing companies the fonts that I use - sometimes they can't even download the fonts. So is there another way to still use different fonts, and be able to send them to outside printers without the fonts being changed?

Thanks

When you create the file ( with "live" fonts ), save a copy ( printer file ).  In the copy, outline the fonts.  Then save again as a PDF and send the printer the PDF.  Always print a hard copy proof and send that, along with the PDF, to the printer.  When the printer gets the proof, he/she will either match your proof ( which you then should sign-off on ) or have them sign your proof ( as a way of approving your art and a willingness to match it ).  In my experience, I always send the fonts with the file and print a directory of the disk showing what is in my file.  Never had a problem doing it that way.  You did not mention what type of fonts you used.  If you used a TrueType font and the printer used a Postscript font, there often will be a difference when printed.  If they say they "substituted" the fonts, then you're done for.

By default fonts will be embedded in the PDF (unless licencing restrictions prevent that).

Are you sure that your printer prints from Acrobat?

Or is the printer opening the PDF in another application for printing?

When you save the PDF:

- do you corectly embed the fonts? WHich setting exactly?

- is there a warning that the font can't be embedded?

Does the printing company print the PDF from Acrobat?

Or do they open the PDF in some other application?

You will need to ask them.
