Export to PNG strips out XMP metadata

Beginning around CC2018, it looks like the Adobe export code for PNG is stripping out existing XMP metadata (that is in the AI file still). Other formats maintain this metadata (in particular JPGs). Every version from CS until sometime after CC2015/17, this worked. XMP is an Adobe supported standard; how can they justify stripping out the XMP metadata?

While hold our collective breaths waiting for Adobe to fix the problem, I have a decent workaround.
1. In Illustrator, after adding metadata with File Info, save the Illustrator file as an .ai file and close the file.
2. Launch Photoshop and open the saved Illustrator file. Just to be sure, go to the File Info window in the open Photoshop file. And voilà, all the metadata has been picked up from the Illustrator entries.
3. Save the file as a Photoshop .png file.
To be sure that the metadata is in the .png file, preview the .png file in Adobe Bridge or open up the .png file itself and check the File Info window.

create a bug report and post the link here so users can upvote it. They do take care of issues for the most part.

I agree it should be an option to remove or keep the metadata.

Currently Export as... or Export for Screens does remove the metadata for PNG files, but it does not remove it fot JPEG files.

Looks like this feature request:

This is NOT a feature request; it preserved XMP metadata from CS1 until CC2018 - only in CC2019 and CC2020 did Adobe change this behavior. We have PRODUCTION clients who rely on this working!!! It has now been fixed in Photoshop, when will Illustrator catch up?

If you use Export, it's made for web sites only (yes, bad name), and most people want the smallest possible file.

That said, the Export As function has SOME metadata control, mainly for copyright I believe.

If you aren't working for Web don't use Export, use Save As.

Sorry, my reply applies to Photoshop! I don't have knowledge of this function in Illustrator and should have kept quiet...
