I'm trying to determine if this makes more sense than Fontographer and Glyphs since it's in Ai.

Any feedback is appreciated

Peace

Biased feedback here (I'm from Fontself team ) but indeed it is a simple way to quickly get into font creation.

But mind that there are many pros who actually use both Fontself and another font editor in tandem for more complex cases (even the team at Intercom does so https://blog.intercom.com/behind-design-work-building-intercom/ ).

Fontself is also one of the most simple way to venture into a cool new graphic filed, color fonts, and Monika actually wrote about her experience leveraging both to do some pretty awesome color font designs: https://learn.fontself.com/design-a-color-font-with-illustrator-fontself-in-one-afternoon-814155df0ae1

There are a lot of options in a font that Fontself can't create.

There are a lot of specific functions (such as interpolating between weights of a font) that Fontself doesn't have.

If you want a quick solution and just start into making fonts then Fontself is great. It's easy to use and it has some important functions (such as alternate glyphs, ligatures, tracking and kerning) so you can make a lot with it. It's fun to experiment. I really like it, because I want to keep the fun in font creation.

It's great for headline fonts and slightly advanced text fonts. But if you're into making script fonts with complex OpenType features or the next Myriad Pro or really advanced stuff like Chartwell, then Fontself won't be sufficient.
