Help with Clipping masks

Hi There,

I am transitioning from Corel Draw to Illustrator and having trouble understanding how some features work...

Clipping masks... these are a bit different to Corel's Powerclips.

What I need:

I'm trying to color some text by placing various color shapes inside the text.

What I've done:

  • I have converted the text to a shape, and merged the letters so I now have one compound shape.
  • Then I have placed a few different colored shapes behind the "text", to give it the colors I need.
  • Now I need to place the colored shapes within the "text" so that the shapes are no longer visible, just the colors, in the shape of the "text"
  • I select all objects in question and say "Make Clipping Mask".

My result:

  • The colored objects get placed within the text, which becomes my new clipping mask, but all of the objects lose their color. I now cannot change fills or strokes of the shapes within the clipping mask.
  • In Corel I could "Edit Powerclip", which would take me inside the Powerclip where I could move and edit the contents freely.
  • I am clearly thinking in terms of how Corel handles this scenario, and missing something about how Illustrator does it...

PS:

  • If I draw a new shape (eg: rectangle), and place my colored shapes inside THAT, I get just the result I want, so it seems like my issue is with the compound shape that forms my "text".

Someone please educate me!

    Select the type

    Type > Create Outlines

    Object > Ungroup

    Keep selected and

Object > Compound Path > Make

Add what you are clipping from to the selection.

    Object > Clipping Mask >Make

Adobe Illustrator Masking is great and easy. You do not need to change the text to outline. Simply select the type and choose draw in side.

and everything you paste into it will be part of the mask.

If you choose to create outline you will need to select the type and create a compound path to make it to one object and than select draw inside.

I enclose few files to explain it in depth.

You actually don't need to outline your text. But it also won't hurt either.

But what you need to do is make it a compound path. A compound shape is something different. You can differentiate thw two in the layers panel.

In order to edit the masked objects, you may just double click to get inside isolation mode. How to use and edit clipping masks in Illustrator

To color the masks you will need to select them with the direct selection tool. But all the paths in a compound path will always share the same color.

The reason I changed the text to ouitlines is because the font needed some modification.

It seems like this is where my problem lies. I tried doing it with live text and it works fine. The moment I make the text into an outline I have this problem.

Can you please show your artwork and the layer panel?

Please click on the triangle to the left of the layer in order to display the contents.
