Hi everyone, sorry in advance if this has been posted elsewhere. I was trying to figure out how to 'embed/engrave' the text as shown in the image uploaded. I got this done professionally but was wondering how I can do this myself. Is it through the "Effects" tab > "3D" > "Extrude and Bevel"..? I tried this but couldnt figure out how.
Here is a sample of what I was looking to do. Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!

I would just use EFX>Stylize>Drop Shadow, the 3D effects, unless expanded, do not offer transparency, it does not darken partially the background as a lighting effect requires. If the engrave were deeper, yes using extrude for the elevation would make sense.

Use a vectorized logo or lettering, or draw it directly in Ai.
1. Place your wooden background and on top paste the logo or lettering, select both and Transparency>Make Opacity Mask
2. Below draw a somewaht smaller rectangle or shape than the wooden background (filled with any color, or chose black), place on top of it another copy of the logo, select both and apply Pathfinder>Minus Front. Then apply EFX>Drop Shadow.
3. Place a darkened copy of your wooden background underneath.
