I am trying to open an exisitng document of Illustrator CS5.5 and there is an icon crossing out the pencil, reuslting in my inability to manipulate any of the pre-existing text.  How do I unlock or enable the program to make the necessary edits?

i cannot use legacy text, because it is greyed-out and unable to look at the menu
