Illustrator CC Wont Open JPG

I'm trying to open an image in illustrator that I've opened before but now all of a sudden I'm getting an error that says "The file "Commercial Litigations.JPG" is in an unknown format and cannot be opened." I tried to open it in photoshop to save it as an alternate format, but photoshop is telling me "Could not complete your request because of a program error." but I can open the file in InDesign so I don't think it's the image file itself.

Indesign doesn't open raster files, it displays a preview which might well be a sidecar file. Thus the original file may be damaged, but a preview still visible.

I just ran into this issue with a "jpeg" that I downloaded from a web site. After opening in Preview and saving again, the extension changed to png - and problem solved!! The reason for the error was the file format didn't match the extension.

It could have some sort of weird issue. Try opening it in a browser to see if the JPEG shows up there. Then, right click and save it out. Another option is to place it in another program like Word, or PowerPoint. Then you can export it again.

Can you open the File with «Preview» App on MacOS? Do you have the original file somewhere?

If Photoshop can't open it then there's definitely something wrong with it.
