I have a new Windows 10 PC and have copied across all my files from the old one. I installed Illustrator from the CDs which I have and entered the serial number. It all installed OK.
When I start Illustrator It opens the first screen allowing me to open existing files or create new ones but when I
choose either of those options it immediately crashes.
This event shows up in Event viewer:
Faulting application name: splwow64.exe, version: 10.0.15063.0, time stamp: 0x9f1f3e8d Faulting module name: ntdll.dll, version: 10.0.15063.608, time stamp: 0x8274fd8b Exception code: 0xc0000374.
When I set the machine to clean boot I get a different error:
---------------------------
Licensing for this product has stopped working.
---------------------------
This product has has encountered a problem which requires that you restart your computer before it can be launched.
If you continue to see this message after restarting your computer, please contact either your IT administrator or Adobe technical support for help, and mention the error code shown at the bottom of this screen.
Error: 148:3
I followed up that error message and found the answer is to run the Adobe license repair tool. Whoopee, now working!

Illustrator CS4 is not officially supported on Windows 10. Some people have been lucky enough to get this version to work only to have one of Windows 10's automatic updates render the program useless. Still others have reported that one update destroyed the program and that the next update restored it. At any rate the bottom line is that the only reliable way to ensure being able to work with the program is to use compatible era software and OS. Since you have a new PC it seems that upgrading to Creative Cloud makes more sense than installing an older OS on your machine.
